Animal Laser Therapy
Therapeutic laser is a relatively new treatment modality with many benefits and almost no adverse effects.
Laser therapy is a drug-free, surgery-free, pain-free treatment for your pet. Laser therapy is the use of specific wavelengths of light to create the following therapeutic effects:
- Pain reduction
- Increased circulation
- Improved speed of healing
- Decreased swelling
Therapeutic Effects
Physiologic changes that occur from therapeutic laser treatment are:
- Increased circulation: Stimulation of blood and lymph flow to the treated area reduces edema and brings healing to the affected area.
- Faster wound healing: The laser stimulates healing factors such as fibroblasts in wounds and dramatically expedites wound healing.
- Anti-inflammatory action: The laser reduces swelling and inflammation of joints to improve joint mobility and reduce pain. It relieves symptoms of arthritis.
During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved.

Treatment Protocol
There is little or no sensation during treatment. The laser probe is moved over the area for an amount of time determined by the injury and location; generally 3-8 minutes. The patient may feel a mild soothing warmth or tingling. Most pets relax and enjoy their treatment!
Recommended treatment frequency depends on the condition. For chronic conditions, we will often recommend in clinic laser therapy three times a week for 2 weeks and then we re-evaluate the patient. Some acute injuries may only require 1-2 treatments. Chronic conditions can benefit from regular treatments. Some protocols call for laser therapy once every 1-2 weeks.
We also have a rental laser available to rent by the week. This has the benefit of allowing you to treat your pet up to twice a day at home. Learn about My Pet Laser & contact us if you would like to make a reservation.
Safety
Laser therapy can damage the eye and permanently harm vision if the laser directed into the eye. For this reason, specialized eyewear is required for the patient, viewer, and operator.
